Engineering Services
Southern Pipeline can provide route planning, engineering, and drafting services. We have provided in house services for utility crossings with Norfolk-Southern, CSX, and the Great Smoky Mountain rail roads. We have also engineered an approved route across a TVA controlled earthen dam. We have engineered and drafted hundreds of miles of a turn key fiber project in western North Carolina, north Georgia, and eastern Tennessee, in addition to dozens of miles of smaller projects, including private housing developments and publically owned projects in Polk, Cherokee, Clay, Graham and Macon Counties in North Carolina as well as in Oconee County in South Carolina. Route Planning: Using a combination of tools, including mapping programs such as MapPoint and Google Earth, along with ride outs, we can help design the best route and method to get a utility from point A to point B.
A very rough route plan. An actual working plan would use GPS markers fore more accurate route lines.
Map of same area, using Google Earth.
Field Engineering: Our field engineer goes into the field along the planned route, measuring distances with a measuring wheel and marking any ground obstructions, exiting utilities, or terrain features that will need to be addressed during construction. The provided is a linear stake sheet. Since telecommunications are usually linear, these maps do not consider curves in the road. Nonlinear notes would include distances from the edge of the pavement or road crossings. Details that need to be noted but cannot be used on this format would be included on an additional detail page. Large format drawings (24x36) are useful for sprawling projects. An example can be provided.
Example of Field Engineering Sheet. Drafting: Each page of field notes is drafted using AutoCAD. Notes can be added throughout engineering, including changes requested by the project's permitting authority (eg. DOT).
Above Field Sheet Drafted in AutoCAD. Publishing: In addition to the drafted pages, the published prints include a coversheet map showing the route, traffic control notes, and a legend sheet. Any type of permanent utility access (pedestal, hand hole, manhole) will also be described. These sheets will be combined into an Adobe PDF format and can be transferred digitally or the entire package printed for delivery.
Finished drawing, published to an Adobe PDF file which can be printed and submitted for Permitting. As-Built Drawings: Despite best efforts of engineers and planners, some changes will likely be made during construction. These should be noted by the construction managers on the working drawings and these changes can be applied in AutoCAD and republished to create a final correct set of prints.
Engineering quotes are available. Pricing is usually quoted per mile, rounded up to next quarter of mile. Smaller jobs may be quoted per foot or combined in the construction pricing if we are doing the construction.
